River Kings capture crown at Sterling meet

STERLING, Ill. — Clinton ran away with the boys team title and combined with the girls team to finish fourth out of 13 teams in the combined standings Saturday at the Sterling Indoor Invitational track and field meet at the Westwood complex.

“We had some nice performances,” Clinton boys coach Tony Smith said. “It was the last indoor meet, and it was a nice tuneup for the outdoor season.”

The River Kings finished with 113 points, 29 more than runner-up East Moline (Ill.) United Township.

Highlights for Clinton included a pair of individual wins for junior Deshond Robinson, a pair of relay victories and 1-2 finishes in the high jump and 400-meter run.

“Deshond had a great meet,” Smith said.

Robinson won the 60 in 7.19 seconds, .12 ahead of Rock Island Alleman’s Matt Hubbell, and the 200 in 23.29, .65 ahead of United Township’s Todd Plamer. Robinson also anchored Clinton’s winning 1,600-meter relay unit (3:37.24), which finished 3 1⁄2 seconds ahead of Sterling, and took second behind teammate Jason Banker in the 400. Banker crossed the finish line in 52.52, Robinson followed in 52.67 and Sterling’s Cornell Hartz was third in 53.11.

The other 1-2 Clinton finish came in the high jump, where Brady Ernst was first at 6 feet, 2 inches, and teammate Will Carr took second at 6-0.

Clinton also won the 800 relay in 1:37.72, Nathan Harden took second for the Kings in the shot put (46-0) and Stephen Baca was third in the 60 hurdles (9.20).

Cody Collender scored in two individual events (third in the long jump at 19-0 and sixth in the 60 in 7.44) and was on two of the relay units.

The Kings also got points from the third-place 3,200 relay unit (9:04.62), Austin Houzenga’s sixth in the 60 hurdles (9.56) and Bret Determan’s sixth in the 800 (2:15.71). Tyler Thacker went 18-0 in the long jump, falling one-quarter inch short of tying for sixth place.

The Clinton girls placed 11th in their meet with 5 points. Kim Kaster was fifth in the 1,600 (5:51.92) for the Queens, McKenzie Petersen took sixth in the 400 (1:08.37) and the Queens placed fifth in the 3,200 relay (11:01.20).
