Indians get first ever River Valley league win

CAMANCHE — The Camanche Indians got their first taste of the new River Valley Conference on Wednesday night when they hosted Cascade. It was a satisfying four-set win for coach Josh Davis, who said several players had breakout performances. Camanche won 25-23, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23.

Libby Schnoor, who led the Indians in kills last season, had another strong performance with 23 kills on 78 attempts. But the key to the victory, Davis said, were the efforts made by outside hitter Brettan Hilgendorf and middle blocker Julia Moore.

“It was way more of a team effort than in the past,” Davis said. “We couldn’t get it to Libby every time, but Hilgendorf had a great game and Moore was outstanding.”

Moore and Hilgendorf finished with 11 kills apiece. None was more pivotal than Moore’s match-point bounce to stave off a Cascade comeback in the final set, with the Indians winning 25-23.

Wednesday also showcased Camanche’s ability to scrap for points, Davis said, something he’s hoping to build on as the season continues.

“A lot of our points were scrap points tonight,” he said. “We just didn’t let the ball hit the floor.”

He also highlighted a bounceback effort from defensive/serving specialist Kelsie French. The jump server, he said, “lost her mojo” during the Maquoketa Invitational last week with limited space to take a serving approach. Against Cascade, she rattled off a pivotal six-point swing in Set 3 from the service line that included the team’s only ace of the night.

Schnoor led the team with 13 digs, followed by Hilgendorf’s 12. Three other players had four or more digs. Davis said his team outscrapped a quality scrappy team in the Cougars.

Setter Kylie Vogel posted 38 assists and led the team with two blocks.

The win took Camanche to 5-2 and on a good start in the RVC. The Indians next play Tuesday at Northeast for the school’s second conference matchup.
