---- — CAMANCHE — A new conference provides new challenges for the Camanche boys cross country team this fall, but it’s a team that has all but two of its top seven runners back from a year ago.
The Indians closed out the now-defunct Big East Conference with a third-place finish in the league meet last year after taking fourth the previous season.
Logan Peterson and Jeremiah Jones are back to lead the Indians, who will compete this year in the larger River Valley Conference.
Both earned top-10 finishes in the Big East meet a year ago, Peterson taking seventh in 17 minutes, 56 seconds and Jones finishing 2 seconds later in eighth place. Peterson placed 19th in the conference two years ago.
Peterson will try to make a bid for the state meet after finishing 21st in the district meet last fall. He kicked off this season by placing 30th Tuesday at Clinton’s Schoolhouse Open.
Brady Determan, 32nd in the conference last year; Zach Hines, who was 40th; and Aiden McMinimy, who was 43rd, provide depth for the Indians.
The Indians do have a state-meet veteran on the squad.
Drake Sachsenmaier claimed second in the state in the wheelchair division in 2011 and will try to make a return trip to Fort Dodge.
