---- — DAVENPORT — Clinton High improved to 3-0 in Mississippi Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday night, recording its third three-game sweep in league play.

Led by senior Erin Wenzel’s 23 kills, the River Queens defeated Davenport Central 25-11, 25-15, 25-13 at Marshall Gymnasium.

“It was one of our better nights for hitting efficiency,” Clinton co-coach Mark Massey said. The Queens totaled 41 kills with just five errors in 74 attempts for a .486 kill efficiency rating. “They took our middles away, but we hit well outside.

“What Erin did was a a function of how we served and pass-served.”

Massey said serving and serve-receive also were key areas.

“Tonight as servers, a large percentage went back with a plan,” Massey said. “We didn’t get a lot of aces, but we did put them out of system a lot. I had (the Blue Devils) scoring only about 10 points off their serve.”

Jordan Nelson led Clinton’s servers with four aces.

“Gabby (Haan) and Jordan kind of use that tennis mentality (in serving),” Massey said of the two players who were on Clinton’s state championship tennis team. “Elle (Tubbs) gets better and better as a server, and she gets off well.”

Massey said Clinton scored nine points off Tubbs’ serving rotations and 16 off Nelson’s.

“In Game 3, we were down maybe three (points) when Gabby served, and by the time Jordan and Elle (who followed Haan in the serve rotation) went down, we were pretty much close to 25.”

Tubbs was second behind Wenzel with eight kills, while Monique Harris led with 32 assists and sophomore McKenzie Petersen had a team-high four blocks.

“I think that’s one of the things we try to emphasize to McKenzie; we got four points off her blocks, and their hitting efficiency wasn’t good (.000),” Massey said. “Her blocking is a critical factor for us.”

Clinton returns to action Saturday at the North Scott Invitational, where the River Queens will face top-ranked Bettendorf, Davenport West and Quincy (Ill.).
