Slattery, Meyer win invitational

BELLEVUE -- Andrew Meyer walked away a home town winner; Megan Slattery narrowly edged Jack Kokjohn; and the Maquoketa girls and Bellevue boys both placed five in the top-15 during the co-ed Comet Invitational cross country meet on Monday.

Slattery of Calamus-Wheatland and Kokjohn of Prince of Peace were neck-and-neck throughout their race, pushing well ahead of the rest of the pack. Both runners crossed the finish line leading third place runner Nicole Nielsen by over a minute. But Slattery was two seconds faster than Kokjohn, finishing at 16 minutes, 5 seconds to the Irish runner’s 16:07.

It took three more runners before Jamie Saunders crossed the finish line as the first Cardinal in fifth place overall. But after her there were a slew of teammates. Cassie Ruppert finished seventh, Ellie Burhmal ninth, Ashley Becker 12th, Jessica Garrardy 14th and Tess Nissan 15th as Maquoketa finished with a team-low 47 points, beating out Easton Valley’s 95 and Bellevue’s 96.

Meghan McLaughlin led the second place River Hawks with fourth overall, and Bellevue’s Rachel Kilburg placed sixth to lead the Comets.

In the boys’ race, Meyer entered the race a favorite, and left it a champion. His first place 16:30 beat runner-up Lucas Schmidt of Marquette Catholic by nearly 50 seconds. Meyer’s teammates -- Logan DeVries, Anders Frieberg and Nathan Goslin -- also finished top-10 while Josh Sieverding was the final Comets’ scorer with a 14th place finish.

Bellevue won with 38 points, followed by Marquette’s 50 and Prince of Peace’s 73. Following Schmidt for third was Maquoketa’s Zach Koppes at 17:32 and Camanche’s Logan Peterson at 17:56.

The top Irish runner was Devin Bly with a 10th best 18:56.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
