Steamers back to winning ways

FULTON, Ill. -- Fulton bumped up the left side of the win-loss column Tuesday with a 25-14, 25-18 sweep of Three Rivers Conference rival Amboy. Now that the 2-10 Steamers are back to their winning ways, they’ll face a tougher challenge Thursday when they travel to Prophetstown.

Betsy Leonard posted another solid offensive night for Fulton with 10 kills to lead the team. Chelsea Lesniewski and Ann Renkes cleaned up from the service line with five and four aces, respectively. Rachael Beiermann had 10 assists, followed by Olivia Edfors with seven. And Lesniewski, Renkes, Edfors and Averi Leitzen combined for 17 digs.

It capped a successful night for the Steamers program. The sophomores got the sweep — 25-13, 25-9 — and the freshmen gutted out a tight three-setter, 25-18, 15-25, 16-14.

Unity falls to QCC

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Unity Christian made a match of it after falling 25-12 in the opening set but couldn’t avoid the sweep against Quad Cities Christian, dropping the second set 25-21.

“The Lady Knights didn’t play up to par with their last set against Quad Cities,” Unity coach Tabitha Fullan said. “Their passing was off, and so it prevented their offense from anything spectacular. Unity will be practiced up and ready to face QC again at our conference tournament.”

Jessi VanderEide led the team with two blocks, and JoLynn Frederick had two aces. Natalie Hirl led with two kills, while Jaime Kammerer, Maria Striley and Katie VanderEide each had one.

Erie edged twice

STERLING, Ill. — Sterling Newman won a pair of close games against Erie, winning the Three Rivers Conference match 25-22, 25-21 on Tuesday night.

Savannah Mettler led the Cardinals with six kills, while Peyton Rus added five and had a team-high two blocks. Courtney Cobert registered eight digs and an ace for Erie.

Prophets rebound big

MANLIUS, Ill -- Prophetstown took a tough road loss Tuesday when, after tying the match at a set apiece with a 27-25 win over Bureau Valley in Set 2, the Prophets were doubled up in the clincher.
