Indians move ball but lose game

MONTICELLO -- Camanche put up 24 points Friday night, but that wasn’t nearly enough as Monticello defeated the Indians 55-24 in Iowa Class 2A District 4 high school football.

“It was just big plays and missed assignments,” Camanche coach Steve Dougherty said. “They’re not a strong passing team, but we just failed to cover their receivers on four or five long passes that shouldn’t have occurred. It was just a breakdown of fundamentals.

“It was a strange feeling all night long because I felt like we were in control of the game. Ball control was in our favor. There’s really no reason why we didn’t win that game.”

Dougherty was pleased to see the offense produce after the Indians managed just six points last week after being shutout the week before that.

“They played very well,” Dougherty said. “It’s a tale of two teams. Against Beckman (a 55-6 loss a week earlier) our defense played well and our offense sputtered. This week it was the opposite.

“We were very, very concerned about Monticello’s (defensive) linemen. I think our offense handled it very, very well. We ran about 74 plays in the game. The best performance of the night was the offensive line. When you gain 19 first downs, obviously our offensive line is the star.”

Dougherty said Monticello blocked a punt, a field goal and a point-after attempt.

Dons top Hawks

GILBERTVILLE -- Top-rated Don Bosco lived up to its ranking as the No. 1 team in eight-player football by handing Easton Valley its first loss of the season, 72-24, on Friday night.

The Dons piled up 597 total yards, led by quarterback Jake Hogan. He finished with 283 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 18 carries, and he completed 5 of 7 passes for 152 yards and two more scores.

CHS sophomores fall

CLINTON -- Davenport Assumption scored 17 first-quarter points and pushed its lead to 31-0 at the half on the way to a 44-7 victory against Clinton’s sophomores Friday night at Coan Field.
