Queens' Kaster
in top 30

STERLING, Ill. — Fielding a young team, Clinton had most of its top varsity runners compete in the freshman-sophomore division, while the River Queens’ Kim Kaster placed 28th in the girls race Saturday at the Sterling Invitational cross country meet.

The event attracted more than two dozen schools to the Westwood Sports Center.

Kaster completed the 3-mile course — longer than the 4,000-meter course used in Iowa meets — in 19 minutes, 7 seconds. Mailin Struck of Riverside-Brookfield won the race in 17:02, 52 seconds ahead of runner-up Kelsey Schrader of DeKalb, who placed 10th in last year’s Class 3A state meet.

The River Queens did not have enough runners for a team score. Minooka edged Schaumburg 74-78 for the team crown.

Clinton placed 23rd in the boys varsity race with 667 points. Junior Todd Broadrick led the River Kings with a 129th-place finish (18:24) on the 3-mile course. Senior Hunter Genco was 131st (18:28) and senior Andre Dunlap was 138th (18:39). Pleasant Valley won the team title with 58 points.

Clinton placed 14th in the freshman-sophomore boys event, led by Jonathan Facio’s 46th-place finish (17:42).

Marquette 14th

TROY MILLS — Marquette Catholic placed 14th in boys competition Saturday at the North Linn Lynx Invitational.

Lucas Schmidt (18:01) placed 32nd to pace the Mohawks, who finished with 352 points. Monticello won the team title with 36 points. Michael Melchert of Monticello was the individual winner in 15:49.

Karter Kilburg (76th/18:55), Logan Schroeder (81st/18:59), Kelby Muller (89th/19:13) and Sam Peters (97th, 19:21) rounded out the top five for Marquette.

The Mohawks didn’t have enough runners for a team score in the girls race, which was won by Mount Pleasant with 105 points. Molly Sieverding led Marquette with a 93rd-place finish (17:10). Lily Horst of Vinton-Shellsburg was the individual winner in 14:36.
