Iowa FOOTBALL ROUNDUP EV ends skid at 3

(Continued)

Opening the second half, Jake Kagemann’s kickoff return to the Raiders’ 15 set up Ryan Brackey’s 12-yard touchdown run, making it 34-7. Kagemann later scored on a 75-yard punt return and Ryan Burke also found the end zone, capping the third quarter.

The Sabers close out the season on the road against Marion on Friday.

Cardinalsfall to Solon

MAQUOKETA — Senior Night was somber in Cardinal country Friday night.

Taking on 6-1 Solon, with hopes of perhaps clinching at least a tie for the title of Class 3A’s District 6, Maquoketa fell behind early and couldn’t battle back from a three-touchdown deficit. The Spartans dropped the Cardinals to 5-3 behind a 49-31 road win.

Solon started the scoring with a pick-six in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Maquoketa answered on the next drive when Cohl Kueter broke through for a 33-yard rushing score, knotting the game at 7-all heading into the second quarter. A field goal by Cam Thede early in the second made gave Maquoketa its only lead, 10-7.

That’s when the Spartans flexed for a 21-point spurt, giving them the 28-17 halftime advantage. Solon scored on its opening drive of the second half for its biggest lead, 35-17, and the Spartans cruised to victory.

The Cardinals cap the regular season next Friday with a road match against Clear Creek-Amana.

Comets dropto Alburnett

ALBURNETT — Bellevue let a tight game slip away late in the fourth quarter against Alburnett, dropping the Comets to 2-6 behind a 36-16 loss.

Through three quarters, neither team could mount more than a four-point lead, but in the final frame, the Pirates eked ahead, padding a 21-16 lead with two more touchdowns.

After ending the first quarter scoreless, Comets back Tyler Banowetz responded to an Alburnett score with his own 80-yard touchdown reception from Keenan Ploessl, making it 7-7 at the half. Ben Lawrence kicked a 46-yard field goal in the third to give Bellevue its only lead at 10-7, reawakening the Pirates.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
