Illinois football Roundup: Ground game all it takes for Panthers

ERIE, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown relied on its running game to close the regular season with a 28-7 Three Rivers Conference cross-over win against visiting Orion on Friday night.

The Panthers ran the ball 49 times for 308 yards as they improved their record to 7-2. All their offense came on the ground as quarterback Ethan Howard was 0-for-3 passing.

Nick Williams carried the ball 23 times for 115 yards, Howard rushed for 93 and Chris Bauer gained 79 and scored twice.

The Chargers (4-5), who needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, scored first, but the Panthers quashed those hopes quickly.

Bauer opened the scoring with a pair of touchdowns runs — from 6 and 29 yards — in the first quarter. Howard opened the second half with a 67-yard touchdown run, and Williams added a 9-yard scoring run later in the quarter.

Erie/Prophetstown wound up second in the Three Rivers Conference North Division standings after Sterling Newman beat Amboy/LaMoille 48-7 on Friday. Newman handed the Panthers their lone conference loss.

The Panthers will find out their playoff assignment tonight when the Illinois High School Association announces its pairings.

Rams beat Mustangs

PORT BYRON, Ill. — Riverdale used a pair of second-quarter scores to take the lead, then held off Morrison in the second half to win the battle of teams that entered the final game tied with 1-4 records in the Three Rivers Conference North Division. The Rams won 16-8.

Terry White scored on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter and added a 34-yard scoring run eight minutes later. He also scored a pair of two-point conversions.

Morrison’s lone score came on a 2-yard run by Andy Bird in the third quarter.

Thunder closeseason with win

DURAND — Shaun Magill was part of all four scores for West Carroll as the Thunder knocked off Durand on the road, 26-16. In the first quarter, Magill threaded a 38-yarder to Marshall Benters to open the scoring, giving West Carroll a 6-0 lead. Later in the half, he scooted 26 yards for a quarterback keeper, giving the Thunder a 14-0 halftime lead.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
