Iowa Football Roundup: Bittersweet Senior Night for Rebels

From Staff reports

GOOSE LAKE — Northeast put together a solid passing performance, led by sophomore quarterback Will Hasken who went 21-of-38 with 250 yards. He hit Nick Wall and Mitch Moehr for touchdowns, but that’s where the highlights stopped for the Rebels.

Northeast fell 43-13 to Monticello on Senior Night on Friday, dropping the team to 1-8 on the season. As well as Hasken performed through the air, he also threw four interceptions. He was also countered by Panthers running back David Gray, who posted four touchdowns on 163 yards on the ground.

Moehr and Tevin Stoecker each had seven receptions, with Moehr racking up a team-leading 90 yards.

Sabers fall in finale

MARION — After battling close through most of the first quarter, Marion broke through first with a touchdown at the 3:51 mark in the first quarter. The 7-0 lead over Central DeWitt was all the Indians needed. Marion blanked the Sabers 10-0, dropping DeWitt to 4-5 on the season.

The Sabers held Marion scoreless for the rest of the half and through most of the third quarter. Late in that frame, Marion returned an interception to DeWitt’s 10-yard line, leading to the Indians’ field goal. Aside from forfeits, in which DeWitt was credited with zero points against Maquoketa and West Delaware, the loss to Marion was the only time DeWitt was shut out this season.

Despite the loss, DeWitt made it into the playoffs and will travel to Decorah next week in the Class 3A state playoffs.

Cards end with win

TIFFIN — Cohl Kueter scored three first-half touchdowns, and the Cardinals were off and running, taking down Clear Creek-Amana 42-28 and ending the regular season at 6-3.

Maquoketa doubled its 28-14 halftime lead, making it 42-14 early in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard punch-in by Jake Kloft. Two late gimmes for Clear Creek-Amana were to no avail and the Clippers fell to 4-5.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
