A switch and a sweep

CLINTON -- Thursday night’s baseball match-up between the Camanche Indians and the Prince of Peace Irish saw a last-minute change of venue from Ashford University Field to Camanche’s field. The change worked out well for Camanche in both ends of the doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 13-3 on the shoulders of strong pitching.

Game 1 starter Tanner Schreiner threw five shutout innings, getting himself and his teammates out of several jams.

In the second inning, he loaded the bases with a two-out walk but was able to get out of the situation by inducing a flyout to center. Schreiner dealt with two other two-out jams by striking out the side in the third and fifth.

“I was real pleased,” Camanche coach Daryl Cochran said. “We struggled on Monday night and it was nice to come out and have some good pitching, some timely hitting and pretty good defense for the most part.”

Prince of Peace put up its biggest threat of Game 1 during the fifth inning when leadoff hitter Lucas Laufenberg began the inning with a single. He was advanced to third on a walk and a stolen base before a ground ball to first cut him down at the plate on the tag to end the inning.

The defense from both teams was above average; minimal mistakes were made in the field.

“It was nice to have no errors,” Cochran said, referring to game one.

Game 2 was a different animal as the Indians came out scoring, putting up a single run in each of the first four innings before breaking out in the fifth for six runs. The Indians took advantage of the free passes, stealing bases and advancing the extra base as much as possible through the first five innings.

Camanche scored its first two runs without recording a hit, allowing the passed balls from Prince of Peace to get them around the bases along with a stolen base mixed in here and there. An RBI groundout to the right side of the field from Hunter Alm showed perfect execution with the runner on third, bringing in Cody Mensinger to score.
