Demolition days

Demolition began Saturday on St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clinton and continued through Sunday afternoon. For the last month, people have been salvaging any materials worthy of recycling, including the pipe organ, stained glass windows, the original slate roof tiles (which were secured with square copper nails), oak stairway and choir loft, tongue-in-groove pine flooring, and the huge bronze bell, cast in 1891 in Baltimore. The David Lohman Demolition Company, Albany, Ill., with 40 years experience in the demolition business, will continue through the coming weeks bringing down the remainder of the skeleton of the structure and leveling the lot. Many great memories of weddings, baptisms, etc. are coming down with this building. Some people who gathered to watch had tears in their eyes as the bricks fell.
