Iowa woman wins ring inspired by Princess Diana

DAVENPORT — A Cedar Rapids woman who visited a Davenport museum exhibit about Princess Diana says she cried tears of joy when she learned she had won a raffle prize that included a ring that’s inspired by royalty — and valued at $7,000.

Maria Shebetka, 70, visited Davenport’s Putnam Museum in October to see the exhibit, “Diana, a Celebration.” She was told recently that she won a sapphire-and-diamond ring made by Bettendorf jeweler James Revell. She received the ring Friday.

The jewelry is made with a 5.39-carat Chatham sapphire that’s surrounded by 14 diamonds and white gold. It’s inspired by the Princess of Wales’ engagement ring.

“I’ve always been a fan of Diana,” Shebetka said.

Museum visitors who signed up for a membership or who renewed a membership were entered in the raffle. The ring was made in honor of the exhibit, and a winner was drawn Dec. 20.

“We had 750 entries, which was 750 new memberships or membership renewals,” Putnam president and CEO Kim Findlay told the newspaper. “That’s 2 ½ times the new or renewal membership numbers we would normally have at this time. It was really a success.”

The Diana exhibit closes Jan. 5.
