Iowa Lottery officials find $1 million winner

DES MOINES — Iowa Lottery officials have contacted a Missouri man who purchased a winning $1 million Powerball ticket six months ago at an eastern Iowa gas station.

Richard Watson, a 58-year-old from Belton, Missouri, claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Des Moines. Watson, who had purchased the ticket in November at a Tipton Kum & Go location, says he simply had not checked the ticket.

Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich says the lottery's security division worked with Kum & Go to determine who had purchased the unclaimed winning ticket. Rich says the process took several months and led officials to Watson, who still had the winning ticket.

Watson says he was shocked when he first heard. He says the prize allows him to make a "major life change."
