Branstad to present budget for next fiscal year

Associated Press

DES MOINES — Gov. Terry Branstad is ready to present his budget plan to lawmakers during the annual "Condition of the State" address.

Branstad is scheduled to give the speech Tuesday before a joint session of the Legislature. The speech will outline his plans for the coming fiscal year, which starts July 1.

Branstad's policy goals include efforts to combat bullying, expand Internet access and support veterans.

Last year Branstad and lawmakers collaborated on some substantial policies, including a property tax cut and new education spending, which the state must now pay for.

Branstad has cautioned that while the state is projecting a budget surplus of nearly $900 million, much of that money must go to pay for the policies approved last year.
