Ohnward to present musical

MAQUOKETA — The “Honky Tonk Angels” will hit the Ohnward Fine Arts Center stage this weekend.

The show will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ohnward Fine Arts Center in Maquoketa.

In Ted Swindley’s musical “Honky Tonk Angels,” three attractive and talented young women make their way to Nashville determined to “make it.” This musical will feature songs from Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, including “Stand By Your Man,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “9-to-5,” “Harper Valley PTA,” “Rocky Top,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” and “Ode to Billy Joe.” The features more than 30 country songs.

Playing the role of Angela is Angie Ruley. The role of Darlene is played by Nashville recording artist Brooke Byam and Laurie Helmers portrays the role of Sue Ellen.

The “Honky Tonk Angels” tells the story of a trio of women who are fed up with their current circumstances and decide to pursue their dreams of becoming country music stars. They each catch a bus for Nashville, where they meet for the first time. They quickly become friends and decide to combine their talents as a musical trio.

The show also features a live band comprised of all local musicians directed by Shawn Vazquez. The band includes Bill Melton on fiddle and banjo, Darren Junge on guitar, Jenna Junge on piano, Mark Lyon on bass guitar, Mathew Kilburg on guitar and Ty Lanz on percussion and drums.

The director of the show is Ohnward Fine Arts executive director Richard Hall. Assistant director is Dawn Hall and Laura Thoms is the production assistant and choreographer. Shawn Vazquez is the shows music director. The show lasts approximately two hours.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door for adults. Students 18 and younger are admitted for $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

A meal also is included by adding $10 to a ticket. The menu includes chicken, pulled pork, potato salad, coleslaw, fresh fruit, roll and butter as well as lemonade and tea.

Tickets are available at Ohnward Fine Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Osterhaus Pharmacy and the Maquoketa State Bank main office.
