Six Hawkeyes in quarters

OKLAHOMA CITY — Six Iowa wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships following the second round Thursday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Iowa is one of two schools with six wrestlers still competing in the championship bracket. Minnesota is the other.

The Hawkeyes have four wrestlers competing in wrestle-backs and are tied for fourth place in the team race with 20.5 points. Penn State is in first place with 26.5 points. Minnesota and Oklahoma State are tied for second with 21.5 points.

Nathan Burak's 4-3 win in the closing seconds over Bloomsburg's Richard Perry highlighted a championship round that saw Iowa win six-of-seven matches.

Derek St. John advanced to the 157-pound quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. Tony Ramos used overtime to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. Cory Clark erased a 2-0 deficit, moving into the quarters with an 8-5 win over Wyoming's Tyler Cox. Mike Evans will get a rematch of the Big Ten semifinals when he faces Penn State's Matt Brown in the quarters. Bobby Telford used a third-period takedown and 2:39 of riding time to defeat Maryland's Spencer Myers, 3-0.

All six Iowa State wrestlers remain standing after day one. The Cyclones are sitting ninth in the team standings, thanks to a 10-3 record in matches and three wins by fall.

No. 5 seed Kyven Gadson, No. 8 seed Michael Moreno and unseeded Earl Hall all punched tickets to the quarterfinals with wins in the second round.

Tanner Weatherman was knocked to the consolation bracket at 174 pounds by No. 5 seed Matt Brown of Penn State. Gabe Moreno remained alive with a first period fall from the neutral position over No. 16 seed Joe Spisak of Virginia. The Urbandale native finished the day 2-1. Lelund Weatherspoon finished with a 11-4 win over Lock Haven's Fred Garcia. He faces No. 4 seed Max Thomusseit of Pitt in the consolation bracket.
