Central approves management system

DEWITT — The Central Community School Board in its regular meeting Wednesday approved the Canvas Learning Management System for district use.

Technology and Innovation Director Amy Wichman said this was a blended learning system for which the district had received a grant to use for start-up costs. A pilot program next year would include seven teachers. Wichman said it was part of the district’s strategic plan to prepare students for life after school. She added that the district needed to aggressively offer options to students which the program would do.

The board approved nutrition service bids. The only bread bidder was Bimbo Bakery of Dubuque; Prairie farms of Dubuque was the low milk bidder; Star of Davenport was the low repair bid; and Kirby of DeWitt was the water conditioning rental bidder.

The student fee schedule for 2014-15 was approved. Instrument rental fees were raised at all levels to $70 a year and $40 a year for a second instrument. The snack fee at Ekstrand Elementary rose to $30. Breakfast cost for adults rose to $1.90; lunch K-6 to $2.40, 7-12 to $2.50 and adults, $3.45; extra milk went to 35 cents. Administrators said the increase in lunch fees is required to meet federal regulations.

The board voted to continue sharing agreements with Clinton schools for girls swimming and diving, and Calamus-Wheatland schools for girls soccer. Also a contract for the school nurse with Genesis Medical Center was continued.

The board approved a student teaching agreement with St. Ambrose University and an agreement with Timberline Billing Service LLC for Medicaid reimbursements.

After a risk improvement survey from EMC Insurance, there were no recommendations for change at this time.

The first readings of policies on background checks for employees and volunteers, administration of medication to students, and video monitoring on school property and transportation were approved.

In personnel changes, the board accepted the resignations of Karlee Rock from assistant varsity softball coach, Amber Finnesand from first grade teacher, Jacquelyn Daters from high school flag corps coach, Denise McAleer from 1/2 junior class sponsor, Heath Kelley from sixth grade teacher as well as eighth grade football coach and boys track coach, and Barbara Sander from general food service worker.

Hired were Leah Mork as assistant varsity softball coach at $2,553; Bethany Hovland as a special education teacher at BA-step 1; and personnel for summer school, Penny Loomis-Roberts, Lynn Schnack and Theresa Wainwright at $21 per hour each. Jane Feldpausch is the summer school associate at $11.28 per hour.

The board accepted with thanks the retirements of food service workers Chris Blount and Sheryl Brommelkamp, and amended the contract of associate Deb Petersen.
