CITY OF TONAWANDA: Meeting set for National Guard drill

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions before the Vigilant Guard exercise comes to the City of Tonawanda.
At Mayor Ron Pilozzi’s request, the National Guard is conducting a public meeting Monday at Tonawanda High school to discuss the operation. From Nov. 1-6, the site will be turned into an earthquake disaster simulation with piles of rubble representing collapsed buildings. The scenario is a 5.2-magnitude earthquake with Kenmore as its epicenter.
In addition to National Guardsmen and local first responders, agencies from Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and as far away as the Virgin Islands will participate. Pilozzi said the event will bring about 4,500 people into the city.
Before the project got off the ground, certain conditions had to be met. For one, environmental concerns on the site necessitated importing cleaner concrete to build the training areas. Those same concerns made landing a helicopter at the site problematic, since it would have to fly over residential areas and stir up dust from the site.
Arrangements have been made to work around those concerns, and the public will be informed of exactly what the training event will entail at the public meeting. A slide show will be followed by a question-and-answer period.
