Village mourns death of student
Death attributed to medical condition, not drowning

ALBION —
Members of the community continue to mourn the loss of a student who died following a medical emergency during gym class Thursday at Albion’s Carl Bergerson Middle School.
At 1:06 p.m. the child experienced an emergency while in the school swimming pool. According to a press release from school Superintendent Ada Grabowski, there were 15 students and two teachers in the pool during the time of the incident. There was also a lifeguard and five other adults supervising.
The school nurse and school principal performed CPR on the student until an ambulance arrived.
The child, who has not been identified, was transferred to Medina Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“We at the district are extremely saddened by this loss and will miss a student that brightened so many people’s lives,” Grabowski stated in the press release. “School counselors and psychologists are assisting students and staff. We ask that the public respect the family’s privacy at this time.”
She stated that the incident is not attributed to drowning but to a medical condition of the student, based on preliminary information from the coroner’s office.
The Albion Police Department is continuing an investigation.
