Red Ribbon Week has joined a local school and a prevention agency in the same cause: drug-free kids.

Clifford H. Wise Middle School in Medina partnered with the Genesee Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse for the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation.

Red Ribbon Week offered several activities for the students.

“I’m definitely impressed with how all of the students rallied around the cause,” said GCASA Prevention Educator Deborah Ricci. “It’s very heartwarming.”

Last week sixth- through eighth-grade students donated their loose change to Kids Escaping Drugs.

A total of $296.25 was collected and will be given to Kids Escaping Drugs during its spring telethon. The top homeroom from each grade level will send a representative to present the money on the telethon.

“This is one of the many things we do at the middle school,” said health educator Gordon Luthart. “To collects almost $300 is great. The staff and students do a great job supporting many causes.”

Students in Luthart’s classes also signed the pledge to be drug-free.

A poetry contest was held representing the national Red Ribbon Week theme, “Dream, Believe, Achieve, Succeed.”

Students were asked to write a poem about the theme and how it ties in to being drug-free. They were then judged on their creativity, figurative language, spelling, grammar and content.

The sixth-grade winners are Emma Gardner, first place; and Brooklyn Moore, second.

Seventh-grade winners are Chelsea Caughill, first; and Sam Simms, second, and Charles Ricci, third.

Eighth-grade winners are Mary Beth Rizzo, first; Mikaela Cherry, second; and Kelsi Jones, third.

Each student received prizes from GCASA.

“They know the seriousness of this issue and are more than willing to participate,” Luthart said. “We’re always looking for ways to help people in our community.”
