Albion spikes Olean

Lyndonville wins playoff opener

ALBION Dominating at the net, No. 5 seed Albion defeated No. 13 Olean 25-21, 25-12, 27-25 Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B playoffs.

Albion will now host Niagara-Orleans League rival and No. 9 seed Newfane at 6 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Newfane upended top seeded Cheektowaga 25-19, 26-24, 25-20.

In Section V Class D opening round action, No. 9 Lyndonville defeated No. 8 Webster Christian 25-16, 25-17, 25-13.

In Section VI Class C quarterfinal round action, No. 3 Roy-Hart advanced with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-4 victory over visiting Allegany-Limestone.

Chelsey Beecher had 11 spiking kills, Paige Golden eight, Samantha Sargent seven and Casey Button six to lead Albion at the net.

“We did a real good job at the net and that was the difference,” Albion coach Ann Capacci said. “We were more aggressive at the net.”

Button also had 13 service points, Beecher and Jenn Knaak 10 and Nicci Moore eight. Beecher serves included three aces and Knaak’s two.

Setting the tone for the evening, Albion got four kills from Beecher, the last of which was the game winner, three from Button, two from both Golden and Sargent and on from Knaak in the 25-21 opening set victory.

Leading by a narrow 9-7 margin, Albion broke game two open behind a big eight point run of service points by Knaak. That run featured back-to-back kills by Beecher who then served up four points in a row herself boosting the Purple Eagles advantage to 22-9.

Albion again jumped out to a big early lead of 11-2 in the third set as Sargent and Golden both had two kills and Moore and Button one each.

Olean though came battling back to take a 23-21 lead.

However, the Purple Eagles withstood the challenge as Golden registered key kills for points 24 and 25 before registering an ace for the set and match winner.

Albion now takes a 17-2 record into the semis.

Lyndonville 25-25-25,Webster Christian 16-17-13

WEBSTER — Samantha Skryp had 13 kills and six digs, Elizabeth Feldman 13 assists and three kills and Dana Siffringer 15 digs, six aces and six kills to lead Lyndonville pas Webster Christian in three straight sets.

Newfane 25-26-25,Cheektowaga 19-24-20

CHEEKTOWAGA — Katie Wright had 11 kills and 13 digs, Meaghan Puff four kills and six blocks, Sonya Rinaldo 10 blocks and three kills, Shelby Seaver seven kills and eight digs, Nicole Adamson 16 assists and eight digs and Kat Jones 16 digs and two kills to spark Newfane to the upset victory over top seed Cheektowaga.

Roy-Hart 25-26-25,Allegany-Limestone 19-24-4

MIDDLEPORT — Michelle Quackenbush served up 17 straight points in the third set to highlight Roy-Hart’s 25-19, 26-24, 25-4 victory over No. 7 Allegany-Limestone.

Bridget Shanahan had 16 spiking kills and Shelby Schwaibold nine to lead Roy-Hart at the net.

Shanahan, Chelsey Jamieson and Steph Wood each served up six points.

Boys Soccer

Iroquois 2, Albion 0

ELMA — No. 4 seed Iroquois scored a goal in each half to defeat No. 13 Albion 2-0 in a Class A playoff game.

Girls Soccer

Allegany-Limestone 7, Medina 0

ALLEGANY — No. 3 seed Allegany-Limestone rolled to a 7-0 victory over No. 14 Medina in a Section VI Class B playoff game.
