Newfane upends Albion spikers

Roy-Hart also bows in semis.

ALBION Avenging a pair of regular season Niagara-Orleans League losses, No. 9 seed Newfane upended No. 5 Albion in a five-set marathon 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-23 Friday in the semifinal round of the Section VI Class B playoffs.

Roy-Hart, which shared the N-O title with Albion at 11-1, was also eliminated in the Class C semis as the No. 3 seed Lady Rams bowed 18-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18 at No. 2 Falconer.

Newfane’s balanced attack included Nicole Adamson with 23 assists, 25 digs and four kills; Kat Jones with 18 kills, 19 digs and three kills; Meaghan Puff with 20 digs, seven blocks and six kills; Sonya Rinaldo with five blocks and seven kills; and Katie Wright with 20 digs.

Chelsey Beecher had 16 kills and 16 digs, Paige Golden had 15 kills and 20 digs, Casey Button had 13 service points and two kills and Jenn Knaak had 17 assists and three aces to lead the way for Albion.

Golden served up the final three points in Albion’s first set win and Natalia Almada scored the final four in the Purple Eagles third set victory.

“It was a lot of back and forth throughout the match but I think they served more consistently than we did,” Albion coach Ann Capacci said.

Albion finishes the season at 17-3 while Newfane advances to the Class B finals against top-seeded Eden.

Falconer 18-25-25-25,Roy-Hart 25-23-18-18

FALCONER — Rebounding from an opening set loss, Falconer scored the final two points to take the decisive second set 25-23 and key the victory over Roy-Hart.

“We had to win that second game to keep the momentum and they just came on real strong the second half of the match,” Roy-Hart coach Bill Holahan said.

Bridget Shanahan had 16 kills and six blocks, Shelby Schwaibold nine kills and Steph Wood six kills for Roy-Hart.

Notre Dame 25-25-25,

Lyndonville 9-15-19

BATAVIA — top seeded Notre Dame posted a 25-9, 25-15, 25-19 victory over No. 9 Lyndonville Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Section V Class DD playoffs.

Samantha Skryp had seven kills, two blocks and 12 digs for Lyndonville which finishes the season at 7-11.

Notre Dame advances with a 19-1 record.

Girls Soccer

Holley 2, Marcus Whitman 1

HOLLEY — Surviving a scare, top seeded Holley got penalty kick goals from Cortney Quaranto, Jessica Bower, Hannah Page and Amber Callen-Ward to edge past upset minded Marcus Whitman 2-1.

Holley jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead on a goal by Macy Reyngoudt off an assist from Emily Troup.

Marcus Whitman knotted the contest in the second half and neither team could find the net in overtime setting the stage for the deciding penalty kick shoot-out.

Julie Brooks made nine saves in goal for Holley.

Holley advances with a 15-1-1 record.

N-O cross-country championships

The Barker boys (14-0) and Newfane girls (12-0) teams both capped off undefeated championship season with first place finishes Saturday at the annual Niagara-Orleans All-League meet held at Lakeside Beach State Park.

Albion’s Bryan Deibel (17:37) and Akron’s Emma Wilson (20:22) were the indiviaul winners.
