Tigers bow in shoot-out
Arkport nips Lyndonville 2-1; Holley teams advance
Staying alive with a goal in the final two minutes of regulation time, top seeded Arkport went on to outscore No. 5 Lyndonville 4-2 in a dramatic penalty kick shoot-out to claim a 2-1 victory Tuesday in a marathon Section V Class DD semifinal.
“I couldn’t ask anymore from them,” Lyndonville coach Lee Dillenbeck said of his squad. “We battled right to the end and we had our chances. It was an awesome game.”
Both Holley teams scored victories to advance to the Class B finals. The Hawks boys’ team nipped North Rose-Wolcott 1-0 Monday and the girls team blanked Sodus 3-0 Tuesday.
Lyndonville jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Joe Ianni with 10:21 to go in the first half off a nifty throw-in by Cody Dix.
“Cody made a real nice throw-in and Joe made a hard run and finished,” Dillenbeck said. “That was a huge one.”
The Tigers defense, anchored by goalie Jimmy White, who made two big saves in the first half and four more in the second, along with the quartet of Jesse Follman, Kevin Ward, Colin Murphy and James Canne made that slender lead hold up until very late in the second half.
Arkport, which had outscored its previous 17 opponents 58-5, finally broke onto the scoreboard with just 1:45 remaining in regulation time on a shot by Vincent McDaniel which deflected into the Lyndonville net just under the cross bar.
“They had us pressed back on our heels those last few minutes and they finally got a deflected goal,” Dillenbeck said.
Neither team could find the net through two 15-minute sudden victory overtime periods. The Tigers just missed on a breakaway during the second OT period which saw White make three good stops.
That set the stage for the deciding penalty kick shoot out.
Lyndonville’s Jordan O’Connor traded goals with Arkport’s Joe Markel to open the shoot-out.
Lyndonville though failed to connect on its next two attempts, the first of which was stopped by Arkport goalie Nick Smith and the second missed the net.
However, Arkport connected on its second and third attempts, on goals by Mike Gee and McDaniel, giving the Blue Jays a commanding 3-1 lead.
Lyndonville stayed alive on a goal by Dix which cut the deficit to 3-2.
However, Arkport put a lock on the victory and a trip to the DD finals when the Blue Jays fifth shooter, Ethan Lewis, connected for an unbeatable 4-2 lead.
“You just have got to get it in the net against a good team,” said Dillenbeck whose charges finish with a 10-7-1 record.
Arkport advances to the finals against Steuben League rival Alfred-Almond with a 14-0-4 record.
