INSIDE COLLEGE HOCKEY: Second part with Niagara AD Ed McLaughlin

We continue our discussion with College Hockey America commissioner Ed McLaughlin with a look at Niagara’s hockey program and next year’s move to college hockey. This is the second half of the interview.....more>>

  • MEN’S HOCKEY: Niagara finally gets over hump, beats RPI
Wednesday proved to be hump day for the Niagara University men’s hockey team in more ways than one.

  • COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Thermilus leads Bulls past Miami
University at Buffalo tailback Brandon Thermilus ran it 11 times for 126 yards and two scores and added a 29-yard touchdown reception the Bulls beat Miami (Ohio) 42-17 in a Mid-American Conference football contest on national television Wednesday.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Niagara beats Drexel before lunch
Once they woke up Tuesday, the Niagara University Purple Eagles looked a lot like the men’s basketball team that won 26 games last year.
Only deeper. And a bit hungrier.

  • TIM'S TAKE: Murphy, Layden pass torch to Mihalich’s team
Silver might have been the color most prevalent Tuesday at Niagara University — from the Purple Eagles’ new uniforms, Frank Layden’s all-salt-and-no-pepper mane, to the pinstripes in Calvin Murphy’s black suit. But while silver shaped the mood, the morning was simply golden.

  • NU BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: Mihalich uncertain when Lewis will return
Niagara coach Joe Mihalich said the bulky walking boot that Tyrone Lewis is wearing makes his injury look worse than it is, but didn’t sound confidant that the senior guard will be back on the court by the end of the week.

  • UB FOOTBALL: Bulls still have something to play for — win at Miami
The University at Buffalo football team will look for its first win at Miami’s Yager Stadium tonight in a game to be televised on ESPNU.

  • MEN’S HOCKEY: Olidis leading Niagara icers as RPI heads to town
For a guy who’d sparingly touched the scoresheet through his first three seasons, something about his senior year has given Ryan Olidis the chance to flourish.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Eagles up early for home opener
Rob Garrison remembers scoring “30 or 40 points” the last time he played a basketball game at 8 a.m. He might be embellishing a bit however, since that was in the Niagara Falls Biddy League, at least a dozen years ago.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Looks like NU's Lewis will sit
Listening to Niagara coach Joe Mihalich after Monday’s practice, one got the impression that Tyrone Lewis might play in today’s home opener, despite an injured left ankle.

  • BASKETBALL: Stampede tries for local angle
If the Buffalo-Niagara region takes half as much interest in Greg Gamble’s professional basketball team as it did his high school squad, Vincent Lesh will be very happy.

  • GIRLS SWIMMING: Blue Devils coordinate another win
Adorned in matching multi-colored Nike kicks, the Kenmore West quartet of Marissa Dressel, Haley Rice, Lindsey Sagasta and Leah Villari stepped up to the blocks for Saturday’s freestyle relays.
An hour later, the foursome was collecting its hardware as repeat Section VI champions at Erie Community College’s Flickinger Center.

  • TIM'S TAKES: Fix is on when you play on the road
Nobody will come out and say it, but they’re all thinking it — Niagara’s men’s basketball team had little chance during a 69-65 loss at Auburn.

  • MEN’S BASKETBALL: Bulls plan to redshirt Mulkey
The Niagara Falls connection to University at Buffalo basketball will likely continue beyond this year.
UB coach Reggie Witherspoon confirmed this week that he plans to redshirt senior point guard Byron Mulkey this year, and preserve the Niagara-Wheatfield graduate’s final season of eligibility for the 2010-11 campaign.

  • WOMEN’S HOCKEY: NU colors Dwyer pink in win
The Niagara University women’s hockey team wore pink uniforms in support of breast health awareness Saturday night, and the players paid tribute to anyone ever affected by breast cancer with their on-ice performance in a 3-1 College Hockey America win over Robert Morris in front of 718 fans at Dwyer Arena.

  • MEN'S HOCKEY: Niagara ties Robert Morris, 3-1
The Purple Eagles still couldn’t manage that elusive first victory as Trevor Lewis scored with just four minutes remaining, getting the host Colonials a tie in College Hockey America action.

  • COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Seyler, Roberts lead NCCC to victory

  • CROSS COUNTRY: Barker harriers win state title
The Barker boys cross country team placed five runners in the top 40 on its way to the Class D state championship Saturday at Plattsburgh State. The Raiders, Section VI champions, scored 66 points — 10 better than second-place Beaver River.

  • WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Niagara spikers roll past Canisius
Sure, the No. 2 seed in next weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament was already wrapped up. But that didn’t mean the Niagara University women’s volleyball team was about to take Saturday’s MAAC regular-season finale for granted.
Certainly not with arch-rival Canisius invading the Gallagher Center.

  • FAR WEST REGIONALS: NT survives Webster Schroeder 26-24
North Tonawanda's depth has been impressive all season. They needed it Saturday night to survive their toughest test yet, a 26-24 victory over Webster Schroeder in the Class AA Far West Regional at Marina Auto Stadium.

  • WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Niagara drops opener in OT
The Niagara University women’s basketball team was looking to get halfway toward its regular-season win total of last year — when they went 2-27 — with a season-opening victory at the Gallagher Center Friday night, but Kourtney Brown and the University at Buffalo Lady Bulls would have none of it.

  • HOCKEY: Cup coming to Buffalo with Expo
As a North Tonawanda resident and publisher of Western New York Hockey Magazine, Steve Manson has been waiting patiently for the Sabres to bring the Stanley Cup to Buffalo.
Since they’ve yet to do it, he and his work compadres decided to do it for them.

  • MEN’S HOCKEY: Purple Eagles drop CHA opener, 5-3
Looks like the tough non-conference schedule the Niagara men’s hockey team played in preparation for its final run through College Hockey America offered the wrong type of education.

  • HS FOOTBALL: Jacks meet Schroeder in Far West Regionals
The Section VI Class AA champion Lumberjacks, ranked third in the state, will face Webster Schroeder on Saturday in the Far West Regionals at 6 p.m. at Marina Auto Stadium. The winner advances to the semifinals the following Saturday at the same venue.

  • INSIDE COLLEGE HOCKEY: Sitting with NU's Ed McLaughlin
Instead of the typical College Hockey America anecdotes, trends and hearsay this space is devoted to, we decided to spend the next two weeks going right to the source — having a one-on-one with acting CHA Commissioner and Niagara University Athletics Director Ed McLaughlin.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bill Beilein makes NCCC debut tonight
John Beilein began his college basketball coaching career at Erie Community College in 1978. Years later, he took four different teams to the NCAA tournament. Now his nephew is getting his first head coaching job at Niagara County Community College.
But before Bill Beilein can become another John Beilein, he’ll have to be the next Matt Clingersmith.

  • WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Zinermon sells NCCC out of state
Kierra Jackson left the Southwest for Sanborn this fall to come play for new Niagara County Community College women’s basketball coach Kirk Zinermon, who has used the Internet’s infinite wingspan to extend NCCC’s recruiting reach.

  • COLLEGE FOOTBALL: UB's Maynard suspended for first quarter
University at Buffalo football coach Turner Gill has suspended starting quarterback Zach Maynard and reserve receiver Terrell Jackson for the first quarter of tonight’s home game against Ohio for violating team policies

  • BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Grand Island is all set for finals
Any time Grand Island needs a kill it goes to Jonas Stalyga. Any time the Vikings need a set they look to Tyler Hinaman.
Put the duo together and GI has one of the best set-to-kill combinations in Western New York.

  • HS FOOTBALL: NT sets record in dominating AA championship win
Led by senior Steve Kijowski’s four touchdowns, North Tonawanda rolled to a record-setting 54-7 victory over Lancaster in Saturday’s Section VI Class AA championship at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Lumberjacks’ 54 points surpassed the previous mark of 53, set by Iroquois in 2006.
