HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 25): Lakemen fall in Class C quarters

The size and strength of Cassadaga Valley prevailed over the speed and savvy of Wilson in Saturday’s Class C quarterfinals. Cass. Valley’s standout tailback, B.J. Monacelli, rushed for 286 yards and four touchdowns as the host Cougars won 40-0.

“We moved the ball a little, but penalties hurt us and, quite frankly, they were better than us,” Wilson coach Bill Atlas said. “We were getting pushed around.”

The Cougars struck quickly, taking a 14-0 lead after their first two possessions. The Lakemen (5-3) hung tough until the final seconds of the first half when Cass. Valley added another score, putting the game pretty much out of reach.

“The wheels kind of came off after that,” Atlas said.

Wilson wide receiver Ethan Baker finished with four catches for 40 yards, while Nate Meier could only muster 25 yards on 12 rushes. Patrick Walch and Cody Reimers led the team in tackles with 10 each.

5N-Ken West 46, 6S-W. Sen. W. 14

Sophomore quarterback Marcus Lobdell was 8-of-14 passing for 158 yards and four touchdowns — two each to Dan Hannon and Zach Bouley — as the Blue Devils advanced to Thursday’s Class AA Consolation Bowl Championship against Clarence at Depew. Lobdell also had 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Martin Bailey and Jomar Garcia added rushing TDs for West (3-5).

5S-Clarence 28, 6N-N-W 7

The Red Devils scored the first 28 points of the game on their way to the Class AA Consolation Bowl semifinal win. Will Cody scored for N-W (1-7). No other information was provided.

Starpoint 15, Ken East 8

Tyler Robinson scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help the Spartans secure their second consecutive win in non-league action. Robinson finished with a career-high 202 yards on 22 carries. Over 150 of those yards came in the second half.

Cory Regnet had a good all-around game for the Spartans (2-6), rushing for 24 yards, catching two balls for 25 yards and returning a punt 33 yards to set up their first score. Placekicker Connor O’Brien had a pair of touchbacks and an extra point.

Defensively for Starpoint, Tyler Smith and Denver Kopp had eight tackles, D.J. McAninch added six stops and Jake Wray had five tackles. Matt Doyle added an interception.

Pat Tuttle scored for East (0-8), which was held to 137 yards of total offense.

East coach Joe Shifflet, the former head man at Sweet Home, Tonawanda and Niagara Falls, earned his 200th career victory in non-league action. No other information was provided.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Clarence Fall Classic

Starpoint had four of the top 20 finishers as it finished second in the medium school race to ECIC III rival Amherst. Amy Cooper led the Lady Spartans’ pack, finishing seventh in 21 minutes, seven seconds. Eighth-grader Livia Chase was eighth in 21:28, Courtney Laderer was 11th in 22:02 and Chelsea Hoehman was 15th in 22:27. For Lew-Port, Caitlin Drennan took 41st and Mary Adkins was 45th. No other teams reported results.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Clarence Fall Classic

Starpoint had four of the top 20 finishers as it finished second in the medium schools race to Wayne of Section III. Zach Ahart led the Spartans’ pack with a second-place finish in 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Kevin Carrigan was 13th in 19:12, Carl Daigler took 19th in 19:23 and Sander Gasser was 20th in 19:32. For Lew-Port, Joe Melcher was 11th in 19:01, Andrew Krause took 21st in 19:35, Craig Plante was 38th and Kevin Foley finished 43rd.
