FSA conducts elections

MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Julie Skiles, Acting County Executive Director of the Carroll County FSA Office, has announced that the Carroll County FSA County Committee has completed the Local Area Administration (LAA) #1 County Committee Election for 2013.

Local Area Administration (LAA) #1 comprises the three townships of Fairhaven, Salem and York. The 2013 COC election was conducted for the purpose of electing an area landowner or farm operator to the County FSA committee for a three-year term beginning Feb.18, 2014 and expiring on Dec. 31, 2016.

With outgoing FSA committeeperson Lynn Bower having reached his maximum nine-consecutive-year term limit of serving on the Carroll County FSA committee, Larry L. Alexander of Chadwick was elected to serve on the committee.

Alexander will begin serving his three-year term on the Carroll County FSA Committee on Feb. 18. Jason Vos was elected as the LAA-1 1st alternate to the committee. Individuals elected as a first alternate, serve respectively, in the absence of the elected committee member and may also be called upon to fill any unexpired term of the committee member representing their LAA.

The Carroll County FSA Committee and office staff wishes to acknowledge Lynn Bower for his past nine years of dedicated service to the staff and management at the Carroll County FSA office as well as the contributions he has made for the Carroll County farm owners and operators while serving on the FSA committee.

The Carroll County FSA Committee and staff also wish to express their appreciation to all the Local Administrative Area #1 landowners and farm operators voters who participated in the 2013 election by voting and returning their COC election ballots.

FSA committees are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of the Farm Service Agency. They help to administer USDA farm programs at the local level. Farmers who serve on committees provide input concerning the kinds of programs their counties will have available and how they will operate. They endeavor to make FSA agricultural programs fit the needs of local producers.

For further information, producers may contact their local county FSA office or go online to

I knew a lot had been written about dogs, and I assumed there must be at least a handful of studies on cats. But after weeks of scouring the scientific world for someone - anyone - who studied how cats think, all I was left with was this statement, laughed over the phone to me by one of the world's top animal cognition experts, a Hungarian scientist named Ádám Miklósi.
