---- — DEWITT — The Central Performing Arts Center and Iowa Mutual Insurance Company of DeWitt Iowa are hosting a performance of Rob Parton Big Band “Then and Now,” with DeWitt native Kristy Smith Parton.
The evening of jazz will begin at 7 p.m. April 27.
The Rob Parton Big Band, a 19-piece jazz ensemble, celebrates and represents the best of the big band tradition with a modern and original sound. Through the creative arrangers within the band, the vast historical repertoire available today and the plethora of modern writers around the country, the band prides itself on hard-swinging virtuoso ensemble playing composed of Chicago’s finest musicians. Many of the musicians in the band are considered brilliant jazz improvisers and lead groups of their own.
Members of the RPBB have performed, toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, including Jazz greats such as Maynard Ferguson, Diana Krall, Buddy Rich, Harry Connick, Doc Severinson, Woody Herman, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme and can be seen in the movie “Public Enemies.” Parton has performed all over the country as both lead trumpet and trumpet soloist. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Ravinia Festival Orchestra and with the MusicNow ensemble featuring new music of the Chicago Symphony. As a theater musician, Parton has performed with national tours and local productions of Wicked, Full Monty, Music Man, Sweet Charity, Legally Blonde, Disney’s High School Musical, Color Purple, Young Frankenstein, In the Heights, Mary Poppins, West Side Story and Billy Elliot.
The Rob Parton Big Band recently released its’ CD “We’ll Be Together Again” on JAZZTECH records. This CD has climbed to No. 39 as of week 6 on the Top 50 Jazz Week Chart’s reported by radio airplay across the country. It has also been logged into Chartbound and is playing in many areas of the world.
Kristy Parton, a DeWitt native, has been singing with the Rob Parton Big Band and Orchestra for more than 18 years. An alumni of Central Community Schools and of the acclaimed Elmhurst College Jazz Band directed by Doug Beach, she has performed for hundreds of special events with Rob Parton and many others. Her devotion to excellence is in the preparation of new music arranged for the Jazz Orchestra often made famous by great artists such as Natalie Cole, Joni Mitchell to Queen Latifah. In addition to performing in the Big Band context, she performed on a regular basis with the trio at Catch 35 in Chicago for more than six years.
The Central Performing Arts Center is located at 519 E. 11th St., DeWitt.
Advance tickets are adults, $22, and students, $13. At the door, tickets for adults are $25 and for students are $15.
