Maquoketa to host vision project meetings

MAQUOKETA — The Maquoketa Vision 2020 project has moved to the next phase and more community public  input sessions are now set.

Five neighborhood meetings will be held in Maquoketa on Wednesday. A proposed community development scenario will be shared with the public.

“It’s important that everyone who wants to have a say in the future direction of Maquoketa attend a neighborhood meeting and give us their feedback and suggestions on the proposed future community development path that we are creating and will ultimately select. We want the public to be involved in shaping the future direction of Maquoketa and this is the time and place to let us know what you think,”  Mayor Don Schwenker said. “Public involvement and support is crucial to the success of the selected community development direction — whatever it may be.”

Meetings will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at first ward, Maquoketa Senior Center; second ward, Jackson County Regional Health Center; third ward, City Hall Council chambers; fourth ward, Jackson County Courthouse; and fifth ward, Maquoketa High School.

Residents outside the city limits are encouraged to attend a ward meeting of their choice.

The project was initiated in October 2011 as a collaborative community development effort by the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Maquoketa, along with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development, to develop a future economic vision for the community.

Based on an economic analysis and a community survey, five scenarios were constructed by ISU.

The five development scenarios were presented to the public at neighborhood meetings in May and participants had the opportunity to provide input on the strengths and limitations of each scenario.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach proposed five potential development scenarios including manufacturing, aging-friendly, professional community, arts, recreation and tourism, and a do-nothing option. Residents have voted down the do-nothing approach, and the project’s steering committee will propose new scenarios at Wednesday’s meetings.

“We are still in the formulation stage,” Tom Devine, Maquoketa Chamber executive director, said.  “The proposed scenario is not set in stone. We want to hear from the public on the strengths and limitations of this proposed development scenario.  Public input will shape the final scenario to help ensure broad public support for the direction to improve and enhance the community. However, this is the time for the public to let us know their views in this important discussion.”

Once a scenario is finalized and agreed upon, the next step will be to create a plan of action with steps to begin implementing the scenario.
