Juneteenth set this weekend

CLINTON — Clinton County will host the annual Juneteenth celebration this weekend.

The event, originally scheduled for last weekend, has been moved to 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the riverfront bandshell, because of the possibility of inclement weather last Saturday.

”Juneteenth is celebrated to highlight, promote and encourage cooperative relations among all cultured communities celebrating freedom and equal rights in the United States,” event organizer Tiffany Harris said.

A movie will be shown at 8:45 p.m.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery and has been nationally observed for 148 years.

Harris said 2013 marks the seventh year of the celebration in Clinton, and the 23rd year for the state of Iowa.

The Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 ended slavery in the United States.

However, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865 when General Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced that all the slaves in America were free, that all slaves in fact were.

Although the event doesn’t always fall on June 19, communities all across the United States observe the Juneteenth celebration.

Harris encourages all members of the community to take part in the celebration.

”We will have line dancing, double dutch, Zumba, a movie and food and beverage vendors throughout the night,” Harris said.

The night is not just about having fun at the riverfront though. People will also have the opportunity to learn about community resources and African-American history.

”I always hear people say there is nothing to do in Clinton. Well, come out, have some fun and support our annual Juneteenth celebration,” Harris said.
