Clinton County meth hotline discontinued

CLINTON — A drug hotline that has been in existence for eight years will be discontinued starting today.

The Gateway Impact Coalition will stop the Clinton County Meth hotline, despite methamphetamine labs on the rise again, Kristin Huisenga, of the coalition said.

“Meth is still a problem, we are just encouraging citizens to report labs in a different way in an effort to save money and to pool resources,” Huisenga said.

According to the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, in 2009 there were 267 meth labs in Iowa; 305 in 2010; 412 in 2011; and so far in 2012, from January to June, there have been 173 labs.

Any drug crimes or suspected meth lab tips should be directed to Crime Stoppers at (888) 883-8015. Crime Stoppers allows citizens to provide anonymous information about criminal activity.

The Clinton County Meth Hotline was created in late 2004 after the Clinton Substance Abuse Council, now known as the Gateway Impact Coalition, and Clinton County Meth Reduction Coalition partnered with Clinton County 911 Communications.

Since the start of the hotline, there have been hundreds of calls, of which 37 have generated reports and several that assisted in arrests, Huisenga noted.
