Clinton Community Children's Choir will begin rehearsals

CLINTON — The world is a song and that song will be sung by the new Clinton Community Children’s Choir.

The 4C (Clinton Community Children’s Choir) as it is called by director Audrey Owen, is non denominational and is intended for any child in grades second through sixth who is interested in vocal training, spirited direction and choral instruction in a Christian environment.

This new venture is being sponsored by Saint Paul Lutheran Church and will be co-directed by Audrey Owen and Paul Hopkins. Owen is currently director of music at Saint Paul Lutheran where she directs the the church’s Adult Choir, Children’s choir, Adult Bell choir and Bell Ensemble. She also serves as substitute organist and has directed a children’s musical each year. She has also taught Elementary Music at Northeast Community School District, served as a clinician at the IMEA children’s music festival, and at the CTIM Conference on Worship and Music. She is also known in the community as a piano teacher.

Assisting Owen will be life-long Clinton resident Paul Hopkins. Hopkins is in his 30th year of teaching music at the Northeast Elementary School in Goose Lake. He also serves as the director of children’s ministries at the First United Methodist Church where he conducts children’s church services and leads the children’s choir. Together with his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Hopkins has made frequent appearances at the Discovery Center, Clinton Public Library and various community events. He is excited about working with Owen and the talented children of this new choir.

Also participating in this new partnership will be the YWCA afterschool program. The choir will be one of their Wednesday afternoon choices. Accompanist for the choir will be Carol Hunter, primary organist at Saint Paul. The choir’s first performance will be at the annual Peace Concert that will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Oct. 27. Other performances will be a winter concert (which will include a mix of secular and sacred music) in late January, and a children’s musical in the spring.

Rehearsals will be on Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. starting Sept. 18 at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in the choir room. Anyone interested can contact Owen at 242-1537 or audreyowen@yahoo.com. Preregistration is not required but would be appreciated.
