Symphony to open season

The Clinton Herald

---- — CLINTON— A program of “Inspirational Landscapes” will open the Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s 60th season with two performances this weekend.

The first performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Morrison High School Auditorium, followed by a repeat performance at 3 p.m. at Central Performing Arts Center in DeWitt.

Conductor Brian Dollinger has chosen music representative of Germany, Scotland, Norway and the United States, including a new composition honoring the centennial of Lincoln Highway. The highway was the first coast-to-coast route developed, and runs through Morrison, and just outside the door of the new auditorium in DeWitt. Composer Nolan Stolz spent some time in the area gathering inspiration for the “Prairie View” section of his Lincoln Highway Suite.

The other American landscape is the “New World Symphony” by Antonin Dvorak, written during the composer’s four years of work in this country. The piece has been closely associated with Dvorak’s quiet summer of 1893, which he spent in Spillville, in northeast Iowa.

The concert opens with the festive Prelude to Act III of German composer Richard Wagner’s opera Lohengrin, and will include the Hebrides overture, written by Felix Mendelssohn depicting his visit to Fingal’s Cave off the coast of Scotland, and composer Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, incidental music for a Norwegian fairy tale.

Full program notes by Symphony board member William Driver of Morrison, describing each of the selections and their composers are available on the symphony’s website at www.clintonsymphony.org.

In addition to tickets available at the door of the concerts, advance tickets are available at Tegeler Music in Clinton, Fitzgerald Pharmacy in Morrison, First Central State Bank in DeWitt, Grummert’s Hardware in Sterling, Ill., and on the symphony’s website. Adult tickets are $15, and $5 for student tickets. Students through eighth grade are admitted free.

Season tickets for the entire 60th anniversary season will also be available at the door of this weekend’s concerts and available on the website.
