Davis announces run for Clinton County sheriff

CLINTON — John Davis, a resident of Clinton County for the last 26 years, has ann-ounced intentions to run for the office of Clinton County sheriff.

Davis moved to Clinton in 1982 from Gary, Ind., and attended Mater Dei High School. He graduated from Mount St. Clare College with a B.A. in business administration and a minor in accounting. After graduating from college, Davis went to work for Mount St. Clare College as an admissions counselor and as the head women’s basketball coach.

After leaving the college, Davis worked in the Clinton area before starting with the Clinton Police Department in March of 2001. Davis said he had friends on the police department who encouraged him to apply for a job with the city and he’s very glad that he did. Davis spent 13 weeks at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy where he was selected by his classmates as the president of the 181st class.

Davis also received the McCartney Award at the academy, which is presented to a member of each basic class who the staff and members of the class feel is the most conscientious student in the class. The award is perhaps the most coveted award presented at the ILEA Academy graduation.

Davis spent the first three years with the department on the street as a patrol officer. He served as a field training officer and as a crisis negotiator. For the last four years he has worked at Lyons Middle School as a school resource officer.

He has received specialized training as a bicycle officer, crime scene team investigator and during the summer months works in criminal investigations.

In March of 2005, Davis received the Medal of Valor for his actions during a Riverboat Days Parade. Davis stated he also has been in charge of the Safety Town program for the last four years and helped start Clinton’s “Shop with a Cop” program.

Davis said the idea of running for sheriff came to mind about a year ago. He returned to college and in May of 2007 he received his master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Ambrose University. Davis said his decision to run for the sheriff’s position was influenced by his friends, fellow officers and deputies who suggested that he should run for sheriff. Davis began talking to people in the community about the idea.

Davis said he’s ready to take on the challenge to be the next sheriff of Clinton County. He believes his experience in law enforcement, his education and personality make him a great candidate for the sheriff’s position. Davis said some of the needed changes in the department are manpower, education and training and the biggest is the building and jail.

“We have known for the last eight years that we have needed to upgrade the facilities and we continue to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to house prisoners in other counties. Change is needed!” Davis said.

Davis also believes in continued training and education, which will provide well-rounded deputies serving the county. Davis currently lives in Clinton with his wife, Anne, and their two daughters, Halle and Elle.
