Body of missing fisherman presumed found

By Danica Baker
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — Clinton County authorities believe they have located the body of a man who went missing after an ice fishing trip on the Mississippi River on Dec. 13.

At approximately 8 a.m. Friday, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a body in the Mississippi River near the Beaver Channel Slough. A Union Pacific Railroad bridge operator reported he had observed what he thought to be a body in the river. A tugboat from ARTCO Fleeting Services was able to recover the body after being notified by the bridge operator.

Deputies from the sheriff’s office, Clinton Police Department officers, Clinton Fire Department personnel and the Assistant Clinton County Medical Examiner responded to the South Fifth Street boat ramp, where they met the tugboat.

Due to identification located on the body, it is presumed to be that of Dean Mardor, 77, of rural Lanark, Ill., who was reported missing on Dec. 13. The Carroll County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office and Carroll County Coroner also had personnel respond to the scene in Clinton. The body was released to Carroll County officials.

At 7:15 p.m. Dec. 13, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was informed of two ice fishermen who had not returned home at the scheduled time. Officials then discovered the victims’ truck and trailer at a boat ramp, located off Diehl Road, just south of the Savanna Army Depot.

A search started in the area along the Mississippi River north of the Apple River. Bradley J. Gallentine, 36, of Milledgeville, was located in the water and transported by MedForce Helicopter to Illini Hospital in Silvis, Ill. A number of area emergency departments assisted at the scene including Hanover, Ill., Fire and Ambulance, Savanna Fire Department, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife officers, Med Force Helicopter, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.
