Iowa troopers crack down on ‘move over’ law

Associated Press

DES MOINES — The Iowa State Patrol is targeting drivers who break the state’s “move over” law.

The 2002 law requires drivers to slow down and move over, if possible, when approaching emergency, construction or towing vehicles parked on the side of the road.

The patrol says it has been trying to educate the driving public about the law, but now it’s time to enforce it.

Troopers say just in the first two months of this year, eight patrol cars were damaged while stopped on the roadside. Last month on Interstate 235 in Des Moines, authorities issued 23 tickets to violators — at a cost of $116.

Iowa is among 41 states with a “move over” law.
