Camanche to hold annual Memorial Day ceremony

CAMANCHE — The Camanche Memorial Day Ceremony Committee and the VFW-Tall-man Lewis Post 9964 have announced that Maj. Wesley Golden, who is currently serving as the Executive Officer of the 185th Combat Service Support Battalion, Johnston, will speak at this year’s Memorial Day ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

The traditional Memorial Day service will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery on Monday at 10 a.m. Those planning to attend are reminded to bring lawn chairs. In the event of rain the event will be moved to the Camanche High School Gym.

Golden was deployed to Iraq in 2003-2004 and served as the Commander of the 1555th Quartermaster Detachment out of Dubuque. Wes has 15 years of military service, 13 years as a commissioned officer.

Golden holds many U.S. Army decorations, including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

Wes and his wife, Kristina, and their two children live in Clinton, where he is a physics teacher at Clinton High School.

This year’s event will be lead by Master of Ceremonies Keith Brown, a member of the VFW-Tallman Lewis Post 9964. The vocal and band arrangements will be led by Kay Harksen and the Camanche High School Band. Trevor Willis, the Camanche Mayor Pro-Tem, will give the welcome message, and Willis Hansen of the VFW-Tallman Lewis Post will give the Commanders Message. Joyce Parsons of the American Legion Auxiliary will give the Invocation and the Benediction. Reggie Reppert will recite “Another Vet is Gone” and Madeline Parker will recite the Gettysburg Address.

If any veteran’s name has been left out of this year’s honor roll, let the committee know and the name will be added to the list next year.

The parade of flags will be hoisted today at 7 a.m. at Rose Hill. Flags will be flown until 6 p.m. Monday, weather permitting.
