Northeast will seek ‘safe room’ funds

By Mary Lou Hinrichsen
Herald Staff Writer

GOOSE LAKE — The Northeast Community School Board is scheduled to complete paper work Thursday night to seek a FEMA grant to include a “safe room” in the proposed fine arts addition to the high school.

The safe room, which would provide shelter for students of the middle/high school and administration in case of a tornado, is also included in the city of Goose Lake’s hazard mitigation plan now being developed.

The Thursday night school board meeting is a rescheduled date. It will be held in the library of the elementary school at 7 p.m. Actions will include the signature of each board member, agreeing that the district will provide a 15 percent local match for the cost of the room.

The board also is scheduled to act on the choice of a construction manager to oversee construction of the fine arts facility. The board members split last month, with president Chuck Corr favoring hiring a member of the architect’s firm, with other members questioning whether that might create a conflict of interest.

According to Superintendent Jim Cox’s agenda memo for Thursday night, he, Corr and board member Rich Krogmann have reviewed proposals from Modern Design and Built to Suit and will have a recommendation.

The agenda also includes the resignation of Kenny Mohr, transportation supervisor and mechanic, and coaches Ben Bormann and Janeen Butt.

Looking ahead to next fall’s new school year, the board will consider:

n continuation of an agreement with the Central Community School District to share a library supervisor.

n renewal of a lease for three classrooms in the Goose Lake city hall for an alternative high school. Rent will increase from $700 to $800 per month.

n a recommendation for reinstatement of Jessica Scovil as full-time elementary teacher.

n approval of the list of school-to-work committee members.

n bids for propane, milk and bread.
