Severe weather hits area communities

CLINTON — Local communities experienced severe weather Friday night.

The National Weather Service in the Quad-Cities issued a flash-flood warning for southern Clinton County at 5:12 p.m. At 5:11 p.m., the National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated flash flooding from thunderstorms in a variety of locations, including Low Moor, Long Grove, LeClaire, Grand Mound, DeWitt, Camanche, Calamus and Clinton. This warning remained in effect until 11:15 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued at 5:50 p.m. for western Whiteside County, southern Carroll County and Clinton County. At 5:49 p.m. trained spotters and radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing destructive winds in excess of 80 miles-per-hour.

The storm was located near Mount Joy or six miles northwest of Bettendorf, moving east at 65 miles-per-hour, with 67 mile-per-hour winds observed at the Davenport airport. At 6:04 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was seen by trained spotters and radar near the Princeton Wildlife area, 12 miles south of Clinton, moving east at 65 miles-per-hour.

The severe thunderstorm warning remained in effect until 6:30 p.m. with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10 p.m.
