Guynn trial is now Aug. 10

By Charlene Bielema

CLINTON — A Clinton man charged with kidnapping and two other felonies now will stand trial Aug. 10.

Patrick Guynn, 23, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree kidnapping (Class B felonies), intimidation with a dangerous weapon (Class C felony) and second-degree criminal mischief (Class D felony).

Guynn is accused in connection with a hostage situation at Jewel-Osco on May 17.

Police say Guynn entered the store at 1307 N. Second St., at approximately 6:30 p.m. that night carrying a high-powered rifle.

To clear the building of shoppers, Guynn had the fire alarm set off before taking two hostages, police said.

According to a court affidavit, Guynn barricaded himself and the two hostages in an upstairs break room with office furniture, vending machines and tables.

The affidavit also stated that while speaking to police negotiators, Guynn said that he would not release the two people because he intended to use them for protection in case police entered the building.

Guynn told officers he was armed with an AR-15 and had over 40 rounds of ammunition in his possession. He also said that he would kill both hostages if police entered the building.

One person was released at approximately 9:10 p.m. The other was released around 30 minutes later when Guynn surrendered.

The trial will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 10. A pretrial conference is set for July 30.
