United Way announces local program funding

CLINTON — The United Way of Clinton County Trustees have approved funding as recommended by the Citizen Review Board Committee for 35 programs in Clinton County.

During April and May, 20 community volunteers gave their time and expertise to review program and budget applications, make personal visits and listen to program presentations before making funding recommendations for needed services in Clinton County.

UWCCI will fund the following programs for the fiscal year beginning October 2008 through September 2009:

Education — $117,195

After School Care, Clinton YMCA, $17,205;

Baseball League, Camanche Junior Baseball, $2,500;

Baseball League, Clinton Junior Baseball, $2,000;

Boy Scouting, Illowa District Boy Scouts, $10,200;

Children's Programs, YWCA of Clinton, $25,000;

Community and School-Based Mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters, $27,000;

Leadership Opportunities, Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, $6,000;

Safe and Drug Free Partnership, New Directions, Inc., $6,000;

Youth Character Building, Salvation Army, $5,000;

Youth Program, YWCA of Clinton, $6,510;

Youth Sports, Clinton YMCA, $9,780;

Income, $164,350

Client Assistance and ACC, Mount St. Clare Speech & Hearing Center, $20,750;

Crisis Services, Associate Benevolent Society, $30,000;

Crisis Services, DeWitt Community Charity Fund, $7,500;

Crisis Assistance, Salvation Army, $10,000;

Crisis Services, YWCA of Clinton, $22,500;

Information and Referral — Information, Referral & Assistance Services, $16,600;

DeWitt Referral Center, Concerned DeWitt Citizens, $10,500;

Emergency Services, American Red Cross, $46,500;

Comprehensive Prevention Program, New Directions, Inc., $6,700;

Maternal Health Care, Women’s Health Services, $15,500;

Membership Scholarships, Clinton Family YMCA, $12,450;

Men’s Transitional Housing Program, Clinton Family YMCA, $11,500;

Men’s Transitional Housing/Treatment Program, New Directions, Inc., $5,900;

Seniors and Special Populations Programs, YWCA of Clinton, $5,960;

Senior Chore Service, Community Action of Eastern Iowa, $5,850;

Social and Recreational Opportunities for the Handicapped, PEP, $2,250;

Sporting Activities for the Handicapped, Clinton County Special Athletes, $7,500;

Teen Health Education, Women’s Health Services, $3,000;

Vocational and Day Habilitation, Skyline Center, Inc., $29,500;

Women’s and Children's Transitional Housing/Treatment Program, New Directions, Inc., $5,000;

Community surveys indicate that the three most pressing human care needs in Clinton County are poor parenting skills, substance abuse and mental health issues.

“There are basic things we all need for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement, and good health,” said Cheryl McCulloh, United Way executive director. “We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and when people have good health. These results have benefits that ripple out to the community as a whole.”
