Council approves monthly CHS payments

By Danica Baker
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — On Tuesday, the Clinton City Council approved an amended resolution authorizing monthly subsidy payments to the Clinton Humane Society for a total annual amount of $22,500.

At-Large Councilman Ron Mallicoat noted that unpleasantries have been exchanged at the Humane Society “within the last six months or so” and remarked he believes there is litigation going on presently. Mallicoat said he asked City Clerk/Treasurer Deb Neels if it would be possible and “the smart thing to do” to authorize monthly payments of that funding.

“That way, if for some reason a different board would take over there that there would always be some money coming in every month,” said Mallicoat.

He made a motion to amend the resolution for monthly payments. The motion for an amendment was seconded by Second Ward Councilman Mike Kearney and passed by a vote of 6 to 1 with Bette Oakley voting no. The resolution as amended passed unanimously.

Later in the agenda, the council approved a resolution ordering the repair or demolition of a house at 653 Sixth Ave. South by Sept. 28. If the house is determined to have not been repaired or demolished at a reinspection on that date, the city will place the house on the demolition list and begin the process of contracting the demolition. Earlier in the meeting, the council voted to assess the costs of the partial demolition and debris removal from the building that housed Walt’s Tavern at 319 N. Fourth St.

The council also approved resolutions:

n Restricting parking on the North side of 12th Avenue North from North 11th Street east 550 feet;

n placing a five-ton load limit sign on North 10th Street at 12th Avenue North;

n approving certain budget modifications; and

n a motion to approve the mayor’s appointments to boards and commissions.
