Several agencies involved in cleaning Camanche ethanol spill

CAMANCHE — Multiple law-enforcement agencies were called to Camanche on Monday afternoon to assist with cleaning up an ethanol spill.

No one was injured in the incident, in which a 9,000-gallon ethanol trailer overturned shortly before 1:30 p.m. at REMCO Transportation, 2403 Seventh Ave., and 1,000 gallons of the product leaked onto the ground.

The Camanche Volunteer Fire Department responded with two engine companies, an ambulance, a pickup and 19 personnel; the Davenport Fire Department Hazardous Materials team was notified prior to the CVFD’s arrival at the scene.

Fire crews applied two layers of foam on the spill and secured the scene, with the Davenport Fire Department stopping the spread of the spill.

The trailer then was turned upright by two cranes and one tow truck.

There is no dollar loss estimated at this time, but the owner is insured, Camanche fire officials said.

Assisting Camanche and Davenport fire crews were the Low Moor Fire Department, Camanche Police Department, Seeser Crane Service, Rogers Towing, the Gateway Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Clinton Police Department. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources also was notified.

The incident was brought under control in about six hours, fire officials said.
