Camanche’s Parker receives Iowa Superintendent of the Year nomination

CAMANCHE — Camanche Community School District Superintendent Tom Parker was among the nominees for the 2009-2010 Iowa Superintendent of the Year award, sponsored by the School Administrators of Iowa.

The School Administrators of Iowa is a statewide organization founded in 1987. This organization represents more than 2,000 Iowa educational administrators. The organization’s mission is to support, encourage and develop Iowa’s educational leaders and learners.

“We are pleased to recognize school leaders who exemplify excellence in education,” stated Dan Smith, SAI executive director, in a press release.

Parker has been superintendent at Camanche since 2001. Before coming to the district, he had been a building-level administrator for 11 years in the Pleasant Valley School District, serving initially as the high school associate principal and later becoming the high school principal. He also served as a principal in Plainfield. Before beginning his career as an administrator, Parker was a teacher and coach at Dubuque Wahlert and Bancroft St. John. His peers nominated Parker for the award.

“Well I was very honored and appreciative. But also I was humbled by the recognition because there are a number of outstanding school administrators in area nine,” said Parker, adding “I felt honored that my peers would nominate me for this recognition.”

Parker said he was very grateful to those who contributed to his ability to be a successful school administrator. He thanked his colleges, the quality educators he works with, his family and especially, his wife, Lisa.

Jere Vyverberg, superintendent of the Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District, was selected as the 2009-10 superintendent of the year.
