Council election results finalized

By Jason Nevel
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — At-Large candidate Jennifer Graf said she was at Thursday’s Clinton County Board of Supervisors meeting to make sure the election results were real.

It’s now official.

The board confirmed Tuesday’s unofficial results of Graf being the lead vote getter, a run-off election is needed between Ron Mallicoat and Charles Mulholland for the other At-Large seat, Margaret Klaes will be the new First Ward councilwoman and Beverly Hermann will represent the Third Ward in January.

Election results are not official until the Board of Supervisors conducts a canvass of the results.

Clinton County Auditor Eric Van Lancker started the razzing early by asking Graf if she could get the streets in Clinton fixed. It’s a question Graf and other new members will likely hear a lot in the next four years.

The review stated that Mallicoat and Mulholland each garnered 1,014 votes. Candidates needed 1,205 votes to meet the 50 percent, plus one threshold to avoid a run off.

The board’s review of Low Moor’s election revealed a run-off election is needed between Karl Greve and Robin Marlowe to fill a fifth council seat. Neither of the write-in candidates received the necessary 32 votes. The run-off would be held Dec. 1.

In other action, the board discussed its urban renewal plan for the proposed Lincolnway Railport. Board members said there may have to be a resolution of necessity before a final vote is made on the project.

The two measures are part of the lead-up process to set a public hearing and the letting of $4 million in bonding for the railport.

The measure could be subject to a public vote if somebody requests a reverse referendum.

The board also heard a request from Clinton Regional Development Corp. Board Treasurer Bruce Christensen for $70,000 to help extend the groups Quality Jobs 4A Strong Future program one year. The campaign is nearing the end of its original five-year plan.

Board members agreed to consider the proposal when budget discussion heat up in January.
