YMCA seeks coats for kids

By Samantha Pidde
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — The Clinton Family YMCA is asking for help to ensure children and adults in need will have a warm coat this winter.

The YMCA began its Coats for Kids drive in the middle of October. The actual event will be held in the YMCA building, 1401 12th Ave. North, in the gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 14. The give-away will be from 9 a.m. to noon and coats will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

Josh Eggers of the YMCA said anyone is welcome to take coats for themselves or their children. He said he is excited that the Clinton Rugby Club has joined the program and will be distributing coats at the event. Eggers said he believes Coats for Kids is a great program.

“The YMCA has a mission to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. And this is a way for us to provide for a need in our community,” said Eggers.

He said many people may not be able to afford a coat this winter and the YMCA wants to be able to help them.

Eggers said that unfortunately, the drive has seen a decline in coats donated. This year the YMCA has only received 100 coats. Eggers hopes they receive a great deal more coats within the next week.

They are asking for new or slightly used, clean coats. Eggers said they also will accept any donations of scarves, gloves or hats.

People may drop off donations at the YMCA or at the YWCA, 317 Seventh Ave. South, seven days a week. Anyone with questions about the program may call the YMCA at 243-1364.
