Stewart will not seek re-election

DES MOINES — Iowa Sen. Roger Stewart (D-Preston) announced today that he will not seek re-election to the Iowa State Senate in 2010.

Since January 2003, Stewart has represented Senate District 13, which covers all of Jackson County; the northern part of Clinton County, including the city of Clinton; and a portion of southern Dubuque County.

“I am honored by the opportunity to have served the people of Jackson, Clinton and Dubuque counties for eight years,” Stewart said. “I am thankful for the support of constituents. They have provided me with a uniquely rewarding experience.”

Stewart served in the Senate for two years while Republicans were in the majority, two years under a 25-25 tie in the Senate, and for the past three years while Democrats controlled the Senate.

“During my time in the Senate, I was pleased to serve as chairman of the Economic Growth Committee and also to be an ex-officio member of the Power Fund Board, which provides incentives for companies doing research and development to keep Iowa a leader in the quest for energy independence. I am also proud of our efforts to expand cultural, recreation and tourism opportunities in Jackson, Dubuque and Clinton counties,” he said. “Creating high-skill, high-wage jobs and providing quality-of-life attractions are essential to keeping Iowa a vibrant state.”

In addition to serving in the Legislature, Stewart is a farmer and a banker. He and his wife, Jennie, have three children.
