Clinton man suffers minor deer hunting injuries

CALAMUS — A Clinton man sustained minor injuries during the opening weekend of Iowa’s first deer hunting shotgun season.

Dale Rowson, 53, was taken to Mercy North hospital following the accident, which occurred around 11 a.m. Saturday. Reports indicated the incident happened near Calamus. According to a Department of Natural Resources release, Rowson was hunting with a group of five when a deer slug apparently ricocheted off the ground, grazed the pant leg on his right leg and entered his left leg calf.

According to the release, the injury was not life threatening. The incident is under investigation. However, the incident appears to be accidental and citations are not likely.

Three other hunters are recovering after being injured in separate accidents during the opening weekend of the shotgun season in Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources believes slugs that ricocheted were the cause of two of the three accidents.

David Cheers, of Afton, was hit by a shotgun slug in the lower abdomen, but it didn't penetrate his body.

On Sunday, Bradley Lynch, of Grundy Center, was struck in the chest by a slug that investigators think passed through a deer before striking him.

Also on Sunday, Daniel Rickelman, of Fort Madison, was shot in the thigh while hunting near Fairfield.
