Clinton avoids heavy storm

CLINTON — Jim Blaess, official weather observer for the National Weather Service, said Clinton County was lucky during Sunday’s storms.

“We dodged a bullet,” said Blaess, adding that the county did not see any tornados.

The county did not receive a lot of precipitation, either, according to Blaess. He reported .38 inches of precipitation. Blaess said the storms that came in late had 60 to 70 mile-an-hour winds, but those went up north toward Dubuque County.

“When it finally went through here, it was nothing,” Blaess said.

Brian Pierce, a meteorologist for National Weather Service in Davenport, has not seen many reports of damage in Clinton County. The only report the National Weather Service has received is one from the Clinton Police Department regarding pea-sized hail at 7:36 p.m.

“When the sun is up and people are moving around we might get more reports,” Pierce said.

Clinton County Emergency Management Coordinator Chance Kness was unavailable for comment about damage to the county at press time.

The National Weather Service is also investigating a report of a tornado in Argo Fay, Ill. Pierce said the tornado was reported at 8:02 p.m., but they have not been able to confirm it yet.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s was also unavailable for comments about the tornado at press time.
